Baptism

Baptism in Light of the Cross

Baptism as much as any other Bible teaching can only be properly understood in the light of the Cross. Today while Baptists, Seventh Day Adventists, and other churches continue to practice baptism by immersion, which is exactly what baptism means: immersion, many others baptize by sprinkling water or even rose petals in some cases. The importance of baptism by immersion is seen when we look at the subject in the light of the Cross.

Just as Jesus gave His life for us and died to Himself, so in baptism we die to self and give our lives to the One who first loved us. Baptism is symbolic of our death, as you go under the water (only for a second!) you are showing your death to selfish ambition. You do not breathe water therefore the water is symbolic of the grave. When you come up out of the water you take a new breath, and this new breath represents the new life you are living for Jesus.

Repentance must come before baptism. This is why John the Baptist told those wanting to be baptized, “Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance” (Luke 3:8). Pronouncing a couple man and wife at a wedding does not make them fall in love. That is to happen before the wedding. So the baptism ritual has no “magic” in it that will give us a new life, but is just a symbol of what has already taken place in the heart as we ask Jesus to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Baptism symbolizes the heart repenting and turning away from self and the old life and embracing Jesus and the new life. In the new life Jesus continues to impart forgiveness as well as power to live the new life. (Hebrews 4:15, 16 Jude 1:24)
